Renovation is tough

As part of a UX course I took in 2020, in the Technion,  I was asked to design a complex system. Inspired by my own home renovation painful experience, I decided to design a renovation management app, that aims to make the renovation experience more tolerable, less stressful, and more successful.

01

Exploratory Research

In order to understand the problem I am trying to solve, I’ve conducted exploratory research. Looking into competitive products helped me understand what problems they are trying to solve, where they have been successful, and where they failed their users.

I’ve found that none of these apps/websites address two main pain points homeowners face before and during renovations: timeline & budget.

02

User Interviews & Survey

I’ve conducted in-depth user interviews with homeowners, who renovated their homes in the previous 3 years, and an interior designer, to better understand how can the system I’m designing help them overcome obstacles before and during renovation projects. To validate qualitative findings, I’ve conducted an online survey, targeting homeowners who have renovated their homes in the previous 3 years.

Qualitative Research

7 interviews

Quantitative Research

63 respondent

03

Business Model: Freemium

Users get basic features at no cost and can access richer functionality for a subscription fee. The main goals are to attract a big user base, gain maximum visibility, and convert free users to paying customers.

04

Research Outcomes: User Personas

Based on the research insights, I’ve created user personas. Ravit Asaf (44 years), who is doing a full house renovation and hiring a general contractor, and Idan Brir (41 years), who is renovating part of his apartment, and hasn’t hired a general contractor.

Ravit Asaf

My general contractor has been trying to install the toilet by himself for hours! I am very nervous and angry.

Ravit Asaf

Who should I call first, the electrician or the plumper? and what is a "siphone", I've never heard of that in my life!

Idan Brir

User Stories

How will Idan and Ravit employ the renovation app?

Let’s see!

1
I want to fill in details about my renovation, so that I get a renovation plan and timeline.
2
I want to see a breakdown of my expenses, so that I can evaluate my budget and make sure I am not going over my budget.
3
I want to consult with home owners around professionals, so that I can contact a professional that suits my needs.
4
I want to watch videos so that I can understand how to install things.
5
I want to see a list of professionals according to area of work, so that I can choose one that suits my needs.
1
I want to get tips and advice about renovation stages, so that I can supervise the general contractor.
2
I want to save pictures of designed houses and rooms I loved in an inspiration list, so that I can go back to my list and check designs options.
3
I want to share pictures of designed houses and rooms so I can consult with my husband about which style I should pick.
4
I want to see furniture and tiles options so I can choose those I want to buy.
5
I want to update my renovation plan so I can get relevant tips and advice about the renovation stage.

Use Cases

Following are two main use cases: updating renovation plan and updating budget.

07

Concepts

Concept #1

Personalization according to the users’ needs from the system.

Concept #2

Follow up on the renovation plan & budget.

And the winner is

Concept #3

A combination of the above two concepts: personalization according to users’ needs and follow up on plan progress and expenses.

Idan sees a personalized homepage according to his renovation plan and the renovation’s progress. The user adds details about his planned or ongoing renovation when he/she onboards the app. Users who chose not to pay for a premium account see a general homepage with general tips about renovations.

I created the prototype with Axure.
